Digital Restorations

The first step in a successful restoration can be physical repairs of the original, but this can often be avoided with careful scanning techniques. After we have scanned the original supplied, the resulting high resolution file is backed up and a copy is opened in Photoshop; this is where the real repair work is done.

The restorer will make many decisions and spend sometimes many hours, carefully retouching the scanned image. This is a skilled process; a combination of artistic ability, technical knowledge, familiarity with complex software and a lot of patience.

Ultimately, the result must be a credible likeness of the original in it’s original state, without loosing the charm that the years have gifted to the heirloom.

Sometimes, certain faults are not corrected; this is to avoid loosing the authentic look of the image. In other cases a perfectly clean image is more desirable.

Finally, the image may be reproduced in hard copy on a number of different surfaces and framed, or mounted with suitable materials, up to museum standards.

You will be proud of the finished restored heirloom, and there will be children yet to be born who will be grateful for what you have left them: the remembrance of their heritage.

An expertly digitally restored copy, with a choice of presentation or printing options.

Timeline:

2 to 4 weeks from the receipt of the Originals, depending on complexity, size, number of originals, and framing.

Digital restorations don’t just happen in the computer!

Conditions:

  1. A start work deposit will be required (usually 50% of the quote). The original will be left at our studio till the work is picked up, unless the restoration is pre-paid in full.

  2. Your original will generally only be handled during the scanning process or as a final reference, then carefully stored. Your original will not be altered.

  3. We can supply the completed work as prints, as high resolutions file, as bound hard copy books (in the case of a family history book), printed on canvas or art paper, framed or mounted on acid free mount board. Museum conservation board & framing, and various protective coatings are also available.

                                            *******************

The cost of restorations can vary greatly and we only give a quotation after seeing the original, or the best copy you have.

Expect to spend between $120 and $650.

Once the work is completed, and before the final print is produced, we will print a smaller copy on high-resolution paper, for your approval. A framing service is available; the work can be mounted in an existing frame, or reframed.

You will receive the completed image file on CD or DVD for archival purposes, or for you to print and share, as you choose.
